Unified catalogue

Unification of the current and retrospective online catalogues; project financed by Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze; 2006-2007.

The unified catalogue project has united the two databases present in the Library’s OPAC, once including the records catalogued from 1993 and those obtained by the information retrieval of the card catalogue.

The unification in a single database has led both to an imposing preliminary revision of the main access points to records (authors, titles, subjects, shelf marks) and to the control of particular cases of bibliographic description.

All this allowed (compatibly with the huge amount of information extracted; more than 300.000 entries) to eliminate mistakes and to level the data that were very heterogeneous since they derived from external databases. At the same time, the visibility of the bibliographic description has been redefined and the access page to our online catalogue redesigned.

Thanks to this project financed by the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, it is now possible to gain access to the whole Library’s heritage by consulting a single database. In addition to the obvious benefits for users, the unified catalogue can be more easily updated and managed.
