The Week for Italian Language in the World was organized for the first time in October 2001 - European Year of Languages - on the initiative of Francesco Sabatini, President of the Accademia della Crusca, together with The Directorate-General for Cultural Promotion and Cooperation of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The Week was brought into being to promote Italian language worldwide, in all its facets: to this end every year the initiative, normally held in October, chooses a specific theme, a particular sector of linguistic usage.
The organization of the event is managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Accademia della Crusca and, abroad, by the Italian Cultural Institutes, the Italian Consulates, the chairs of Italian studies at the various universities, the Committees of the Dante Alighieri Society and other Associations of Italians abroad.
The event has had a rising success year after year, with a growing number of participants and events suited to all members of the public, demonstrating the vitality of the interest in the Italian language and culture throughout the whole world.
One of the highlights of the Week is a massive videoconference, a moment of cultural exchange on a grand scale, with participants from Institutes all over the world. Every year, as part of the celebrations, a contest named "Scrivi con me" ('Write with me') takes place. This contest is reserved for students from Italian or bilingual senior high schools in Italy and abroad, supervised every year by a different leading personality of Italian Literature or Culture.
