On the afternoon of 9 April 2002, the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi visited the Accademia della Crusca. He was welcomed by the President of the Accademia, Prof. Francesco Sabatini, the Honorary President Prof. Giovanni Nencioni, the Vice-president Prof. Nicoletta Maraschio and the board of Academicians that decided, during a unique session, to assign the title of Academician Honoris Causa to the President of the Republic. During the private section of the visit, the President of the Republic visited the Sala delle Pale, a highly symbolic place in the Accademia, and the Library, where he was shown the rarest and most valuable volumes.
In honour of the visit, a small volume was printed that collated the reproduction and transcription of texts relating to Voltaire’s election to the role of Academician on 21 May 1746.
