Sailing between Words: From Papers to Information Technology
On Thursday, 15 December 2005, the Accademia della Crusca organized a public event to present the IT projects completed in recent years. Luciano Sala, Edoardo Speranza, Francesco Sabatini, Nicoletta Maraschio e Bice Mortara Garavelli all spoke at the event. The new reading rooms of the Historical Archive, dedicated to Severina Parodi (recently deceased), were also formally opened to the public. With the help of a multimedia presentation, the public was given guidance on how to navigate the words of yesterday and today, the documents, manuscripts, books and personalities (men of letters, scientists, lexicographers, grammaticians and common people) who shaped the history of the Accademia as well as the history of Italian, the national language, and also the voices of the radio and those of contemporary Florentine (balanced between a traditional vocabulary and standard Italian). A keen technological programme has been developed by the Accademia in the last ten years to respond to a set of interrelated and fundamental goals: to preserve the patrimony of books and documents owned by the Accademia, to grant easier access to these resources to as wide a public as possible, and to create research programmes able to further the knowledge of Italian, its history through the centuries and its current uses.
