From 1998 onwards, the then President of the Accademia della Crusca, Giovanni Nencioni, proposed to insert a declaration regarding the official status of the Italian language into the Italian constitution.

The Accademia della Crusca was recently asked for its opinion following an audition requested by the First Commission (Constitutional Affairs) of the Chamber of Deputies, presided over by the Hon. Luciano Violante, indicating the names of Academicians to consult, about the formulation to insert in the 12th Article of the Italian Constitution to make the Italian language the official language of Italy.

Within the Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, it has been the Hon. Prof. Roberto Zaccaria who has advocated the modification of the Constitution to include the new declaration.

The Italian version of this page contains the document compiled by the Academicians with their opinion about this issue.
